Below is the documentation of a poor customer experience i went through some time ago.
It got a lot of attention in December of 2011 and thats what the edits are for at the top...
I leave it up here as a reminder to myself of what poor customer experience can do to a company.
Read more about customer service, and this story, in a soon to be published book called "At Your Service"

Edit - 12/27/2011 (8:30am MST) - I see Paul is at it again. I've received a few emails today making sure i saw the new shitstorm. Classic Paul it looks like. Page views up over 8k already today. Yay for the internetz!

Edit - 12/27/2011 (9:45am MST) - Wow, 1 hour later and Analytics is already showing 20,346 views (18,257 unique). I couldnt be happier that this is getting attention! Thank you all for reading and showing that us little people on the internet can have a voice! Say hi if your bored - Google+

Hey Paul, am i still one little person out of millions? :-)

Edit - Paul/Ocean Marketing no longer represents The Avenger Controller, but lets support the original inventor! :-) - I just received the following in an email:

I want to start off by saying that I have absolutely no affiliation with the Avenger Controllers, Oceanside Marketing, or anybody else involved with today's fiasco. I'm just a longtime PA reader and member of the forums who had nothing better to do today.

I managed to get hold of the personal phone number for David Kotkin, the guy who invented the Avenger controller. I want to point out that he is a teacher and originally came up with it to help a boy in his class. (source: http://miami.cbslocal.com/2011/04/15/inventive-teacher-gives-disabled-student-control/)

When I called, David was genuinely apologetic and had already let Paul Chrisoforos/Oceanside Marketing go. He said he was in the process of contacting Penny Arcade, trying to get the contact info for Dave, and release a statement. He seemed so overwhelmed and out of his depth and distressed (who wouldn't be if they woke up one day and had this dumped on them) that I wanted to put in a word on his behalf as well.

He did give me an email to reach him directly at removed for privacy as well as a phone number:  removed for privacy

I realize this probably does you, personally, no good this late. But with the new situation, I was hoping you could put up an update.

Again, beyond talking to Kotkin for a few minutes on the phone, I have no affiliation. I just want to do the right thing.

Thanks,
Name removed

*** Original page content below posted June 2011***

The following is an email exchange between me and a company of which i bought a product from. Well, at least their customer service department and/or president. Im still a bit confused at who all i spoke with. Youll see what i mean.
The beginning is mostly the documentation of the poor experience with this company...
There were a few phone calls in the exchange that, unfortunately, were not recorded.
I will recount them to the best of my memory, however it wasn't the best part by far anyway. (nor highly significant)
If they happen to have them recorded id love to have them! Perhaps once this is shared they will oblige? lol
Below is a recap of the emails.
The good stuff starts on June 22nd and then really gets going on the 29th.

Note: I have stripped out some personal info for obvious reasons. If it becomes an issue, i will export and post all the emails in their native/raw context for proof. Id prefer not to, but i have nothing to hide either, and will if needed.

The beginning: Order confirmation email. (Relevant parts are here, the full email is in the zip...)

At this point it i figure its annoying, but hey, if its cool, im getting a second one for free. Sweet. Ill wait.

I tend to keep a close eye on my account. I notice that my card is charged February 11th.
This is against Visa's policy by the way, to charge a card prior to shipping the item. Ill file a complaint with Visa shortly.
Anyone know if this violates any laws? (I live in Idaho for state laws)

Few days later, checkin on the order:

Scott, please contact me by phone ASAP.
I was promised this would be shipped in the Febuary 28th batch.
I was also promised that i would be given a "100% discount code which can be used for the new version of the Avenger, which will become available this April"
You have also charged my Visa without shipping the item. It is against VISA and MasterCard's regulations for a merchant to bill their cards prior to shipping.

I do not want to cancel my order.
I want my order to ship as promised.
I also want the discount code for a free controller in April. (You offered this, i never asked for it. At this point I expect it, and will settle for nothing less...)

The email i received from your company just after replacing the order is copied below.
If you would like me to forward this email directly to you please let me know and id be happy to do so.

Please do not let this situation degrade anymore.

Remember, my credit card was charged February 11th. More than a month ago. They have my money and have had it for a while now. Im a bit worried, but at least they are answering the phone and emails, even if not always the most timely...
Ok, ill continue waiting. Shit happens, just my luck, but whatever, i know sometimes its no ones fault so ill be patient.

Wow. At this point i pretty much thinking management is incompetent.
To screw up this much and to let this kind of thing happen to customers?
I mean, how do you screw up that bad?
To delay a customers order over two months and have actually charged the order two months prior to shipping it.
Regardless of the outcome ill provide some negative feedback and possibly file a complaint with Visa soon in case this is a scam.
Shit, im probably screwed here. But, i figure ill wait this one out.

About a week after the deadline has passed im thinking im screwed. I call again, expecting an disconnected number or something like that. But low and behold, they answer.
Same ol story about customs. Not their fault.
Sorry for the delay, blah blah blah blah freakin blah.
Apparently they have given up letting customers know of any more delays at this point though. Pricks...

About 2 hours later i receive a phone call.
Its Paul Christoforo. To the best of my knowledge this is my first interaction with him.
This is a half important phone call that i really wish i had recorded but i will recap it as accurately as possible with as little slant as possible.

I was pretty upset with Paul and his company at this point. I started to explain why and Paul interrupted me to scold me for leaving a message about taking legal action and for not being patient as he gets "hundreds of emails a day" and it woudl take time to get to them. He is the one answering them all now he says!
It had been over a week since i send the first reminder, 2 days since the last! How long does it take Paul? 3 years?
I reminded Paul i was upset with his company and that i could email me the emails promising the discount code.
He obviously didnt see my point but said he would take care of it "soon"
I said this was not acceptable, i wanted to know this was resolved now with this call.
He started whining about having a lot to do and that he would have to locate my correspondence.
All the while ive already hit sent.
I honestly wasnt paying attention to all of what he said, but when he finished i told him to check his mail.
He saw my email, read it, and said he would get it sent out. No indication of anything further needed from me.
That was is Monday.

Today is Wednesday. No further contact at all from Paul so i decide to find out whats going on with this.

So calm yourself down , be respectful and do as I say or ask to get your free controller. I DEAD SERIOUS ! Be a little more humble we can refuse the right to ship out anything to anyone we want , I’m trying to help you. Small claims court for 49 dollars haha … that’s cute . I’m the President of my company not The Avengers so keep  your punk smite  ignorant comments to yourself. If I wasn’t trying to help you I wouldn’t have emailed you back. Customer service of old is gone were in a new generation now. Sorry for any inconvenience , this will ship tomorrow I’m putting in the order now .

No need to beg a simple reply to the email with your address would have been sufficient, and according to you your order already shipped how do we know you never received it ?

Anyway Ill make sure its made good and you get The New Avenger learn to be more understanding when you don’t know whats going on behind the scenes.

Your order will ship tomorrow thanks for your email have a good one.

Your right. Im one little person out of millions...

Im not surprised much by this ordeal. Poor customer service is, as you say, "Customer service of old is gone were in a new generation now"...
I agree, poor customer service is rampant these days...

The biggest surprise is that your arrogant enough to say it in an email. Or stupid? I guess thats yet to be seen.

You run a few companies?
I manage one. I make a decent wage. But i seriously doubt i make anywhere near the amount of money you do... Thats why i would take you to court for 49 dollars sir. That and for the principle of it.
I did not ask for this as a concession, it was offered to me. That was the reason i let the order stand.

Then you charged me for it, more than a month before you shipped it. Is there where my Karma will come in? Am i being punished for having been a bad customer elsewhere at one of your other companies?
So yeah, i was determined that i was going to get the discount code.

Then i finially get my order. Yay, its fun. Wasnt sure about it being worth 49 bucks, but eh, cool enough.
Weeks after that, (see, im patient) still no discount code. No email saying its coming. Nothing.
At this points it seems to me that there was no intention of follow through from your company. You say it was because of some poor customer service rep or something like that... Cool, i understood and just asked for what was promised in a timely manner.
You told me to email you and youd get it done soon. Sir, with your track record i had no faith.
I already had hit reply and resent you the same email that was in your inbox somewhere previous. (You know Google has filters right? Their handy for prioritizing and stuff like that)
Andyway, I told you the email was sent, there was a pause and you said "Your Nathan Stansell?" i said yes...
Then you said youd get it done, great.
That was Monday.
And so today begins this current email exchange. How interesting its been...

Sir, youve humbled me.
I have no doubt that im a little guy to someone like you. I also dont doubt for one moment that youll likely benefit from the negative publicity. I totally get that.
Its too bad for society these days...

Enjoy life Paul.

It really is sad that this kind of person exists and profits from us hard workers.
I could go on for a while about where this kind of person is leading us in society.
A prime example of the mentality of so much upper management these days.
But really, its late, my poor old laptop is heating up and frying my balls...
Its time for bed so this workin man can try to make a living tomorrow.

I await my second controller. I have a friend that wants one and also cant afford it. Ill give it to him.
Whats 49 bucks right?

Any further updates will be shared...

Peace to all, and dont be like this guy.

Nate I just re read your email again and you seem like a really nice guy and please forgive me for any arrogant or unprofessionalism on my part. You see I didn’t soon forget you I am actually following up with you again J . Your 100% correct in everything you said and just so you know it wasn’t 1 rep it was an entire company and everything got transferred to me I’m running everything alone. I’m dealing with a lot of stuff and not your problem rest assured your controller is going out tomorrow and I’ll make sure you get it . I want you to enjoy our product and have a good experience with our or my customer service. Thank you again for your time and business Nate I hope your having an excellent night and if you need anything you can always call me that’s my direct number below.

First of all, im not sharing his cell number. Thats mean...
Other than that, way too little, way too late sir.
I spent my entire night, 5 hours putting this page together. Just as i said i would, and as you encouraged.
Then as soon as i was finished, i emailed links to Engadget, The Consumerist, and posted it to Reddit.
Not 15 minutes later, i received the above email. What was that about Karma Paul?
Had i not already put it together and emailed links, i very may well have let it go...
I very much know how it goes to have a bad day.
However i feel his demeanor to me was inexcusable and this kind of attitude is too common these days so the page stays up.
Its 1:30 am now. Im going to bed.

Enjoy life Paul Christoforo...

I shared a link to this page with them too.
Strangely, it was deleted within moments...
So i shared it in his discussion group. And disappeared even quicker!

Help me out and like his page so you can share the link with him.
Im sure he will enjoy the free advertising!

Am i still one little person out of Millions Mr Paul Christoforo?
Your quick at deleting stuff on your own Facebook page...

No hard feelings on the post by the way I read through it all it sucks but what can I do every message to you I said I would send one out right away and I did . I wish you would have taken my personal information out of there . You win double you get the controller and you got to trash me , only bad thing ever said about me on the internet I guess there goes my perfect reputation. I apologize again.

Mr Christoforo.
Doing some research of your own i take it? ;-)
Thank you for the apology.

You sealed your fate with me when you told me i was "one little person out of Millions".
Yes you said you would send the controller out. I appreciated that.
However the time and frustration to get there, and then follow that up with the way you treated me... Wow...
And from someone that bills themselves as a Social Media Marketer. You didnt see this coming??? lol

Prior to my current job, i was in the IT industry for many years. Part of that involved web design. ;-)
Next time your talking to a little person, remember that sometimes we may be one little person out of a million, but in this age, one person can have a loud voice too!

I removed your cell phone. Everyone thing else you share in your signature every email you send. The last thing ill do is hide your identity. I want people to know who you are and what you said to me sir. I wish you no physical harm in any way. I do however hope that there are repercussions for you.

I didnt  say much of anything to you , whatever gives you something to do with your time. I re read all your emails and all my replies, I told you in every email Id be sending you your unit because I didn’t remember your call you insulted me , and were quite vulgar throughout the entire conversation you posted. The few comments I did make didn’t really make that big of a difference and well enjoy your controller and have a nice day or life maybe we will bump into each other on our motorcycles your out in California as am I Hells Kitchen Ortega Hwy.
